Unlucky County Bow Out Of Cup

Nottm Forest
3 - 3
Notts Co

City Ground

9th August 2011

Attendance: 21,605

Referee:

Nottingham Forest somehow managed to get the better of Notts County at the City Ground on Tuesday, but they had to go to penalties to progress.

Lee Hughes, who should have missed the game, looked like he was going to go down in County folklore when he put Notts into a 3-2 lead in extra time, after the 90 minutes had produced a 2-2 scoreline.

However, Wes Morgan levelled in the 122nd minute with a shot from 25 yards.

Then things went wrong in the penalty shoot-out for the County striker when he had the chance to put the Magpie through after George Boatang had missed for Forest, but his effort flew over the top of the bar much to the disbelief of the Notts faithful.

And when Neal Bishop did something similar with his penalty, it was the home fans who were left celebrating not only going through, but coming back from the brink.

Forest were making plans for the second round after going in front 2-1 with goals from Lewis McGugan and Robbie Findley with 15 minutes to play, but Craig Westcarr hit back against his old club to force the game into extra time and Notts were looking good to go on and win.

And that looked even more likely when Lee Hughes struck his brilliant effort with eight minutes to go, that was until Wes Morgan decided to spoil things.

But take nothing away from County, had luck been on their side, Martin Allen would have been looking forward to the second round draw.
