Spencer released

I know Elite doesn't agree, but I'm pretty gutted about this. He's a hard-working, young, popular player who is still recovering from an extremely serious injury, yet has still scored a hat-load for the reserves.

In my opinion, a loan spell at the beginning of the season would have told us exactly what we needed to know about him. He might never be the player he was, but if it will be an awful feeling if he returns to form while playing for another club after 18 months of anticipation.

Also, are there any players more popular with fans than Sheehan and Spencer? It's like the club are deliberately trying to annoy the majority of supporters with these decisions....

To me contract cancelled by mutual consent says Spencer has asked the club to cancel his contract.

It would not me if he has had an other from another club all ready.

I would not be surprised at all if he went to Cambridge, but then plenty of managers will have seen him banging in goals for the reserves too.

I was surprised to hear about this news and although I'm not one who believes that Spencer should be ahead of Stead in the pecking order, I am sure we could have given Jimmy a better chance of getting back to his former self if he had been sent out on loan. He has done well in the reserves, which has clearly been a poor standard, but has looked well off the pace during the few opportunities he has had in the first team. A loan at a conference team or with a League 2 rival would have made sense but he appears to have been poorly managed. Good luck to him.

He was not given a real chance to recover from the injury nor an opportunity to get back to form by being ignored or only having a few minutes on the pitch.

I agree a loan would have made sense which makes me suspect that his face doesn't fir or Stead has to be picked every week.

Another example of poor decision making!

As an aside, it struck me as strange that the Head of Recruitment should be the one commenting on a player departure. Shouldn't his remit be limited to bringing players in?

I would say I half agree. It remains to be seen whether this is a good decision by the club or a bad one. Offer me the JS of the great escape season and I wouldn't just keep him, I'd extend his contract. Offer me the JS we have (albeit briefly) seen since his bad injury and I'd probably release him. We can't be sure that he'll get back to the excellent standard he once attained. I do strongly agree with a loan spell as being the best option. That way he would get a run of games and we could have seen if he was worth a new contract.

That's my problem, he wasn't given the opportunity to show that he was back to his old self.

Whats done is done, if Swerts goes to Cyprus and if you include Wroe that's 5 players off the books, hopefully we will get 1 or 2 center backs either before the transfer window closes or when the loan window opens.

Unsurprisingly, Spencer has signed for Cambridge until the end of the season.

Only to the end of the season, shows that Derry is not sure about whether Spencer has fully recovered from his injury and is as good as he used to be.

We should have sent him out on loan.

the squad needs to shed some weight and believe this was probably best for the club and player, he wasn't getting much of a sniff of first team action, other clubs wanted him so let him go now and not end of season when every released player is looking for clubs. I think notts have done him a favour to be honest.
