Captain Goalie

Did I hear correctly Tuesday night - Uncle Colin saying Scott Loach was captain for the night? Good goalie or not, his first proper appearance and he`s cap`n? Strange one, that,

In MY opinion a side cannot be organised or controlled from the back. How can he have a quiet word with the midfield if it`s not clicking? Or the mis-firing strikers being too far apart - or too close?

Again, in MY opinion the captain should be an outfield player who knows the abilities or otherwise of the rest of the team and who is respected by them. He is - or should be - a closer vocal extension of the managers` instructions.

I would rather the captain be an outfield player too and the obvious choice for me would be Swerts.

I agree that it should be an outfield player. If Swerts is out injured, another defender instead?

There don't appear to be any obvious contenders amongst the other defenders. It might sound like an absolutely crazy idea, but if Swerts were unavailable, would having the armband bring the best out of Noble?

I personally have problem with a goalie being captain

A team should have enough leaders playing outfield.

I agree that there should be although you could almost do with an unofficial outfield captain who will be the player who is always there to protect / calm down his teammates and to deal with the referee when anything kicks off in the opposite half of the pitch.

I've never been keen on a goalkeeper as captain. Our problem is that so few players have nailed down a starting place it's difficult to know who else to choose. I quite like the idea of Noble taking the armband, definitely a gamble but a big plus if he did respond to the responsibility in the right way.

You mean an old fashioned vice captain?

Problem is the risk that he doesn't calm down and whether the other players would listen to him.

I agree we are short of candidates though.

That's the gamble, no telling how Noble would react. I know that in my working life the more responsibility I was trusted with the more responsibly I acted. Might just be the making of Noble.

I haven't got any problems with a keeper being a captain, everyone has responsibilities in the team to look out and guide their team mates. A captain is mostly just an armband!

However I do see that giving it to Noble could change his mentality a little and make him a calmer player, or the "power" goes to his head and sees the armband as a license to confront the ref about everything.

I'd prefer a midfielder (first choice) or defender to be captain. I wish we had a Stuart Pearce character - assured of a place in the team, leading by example who was our captain.

So who was the best Notts captain you've known?

Phil Turner
Don Masson

spring to mind for me.

Has to be Phil Turner for me. The first captain i witnessed and was solid, even in the masters tournaments you can tell he's a natural leader after all those years.

What ever happened to the masters? I really enjoyed them

Don Masson was sadly before my time, so I would have to say Phil Turner too. Extremely reliable and a calm head. A great example to all his teammates who clearly wanted to play for him. The fans used to sing 'Captain Fantastic' and it was a title well deserved.
