'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Spencer Shining At Meadow Lane

Manager Shaun Derry has hailed the impact of striker Jimmy Spencer since he joined the club and said he hopes there is even more to come from him before the end of the campaign as we continue to bid to secure our League One safety for another season.

Speaking to the Official Site Derry couldn't have been more pleased with the form of the 22 year old since he joined us back in the January (well early February) transfer window on a free transfer, having been released by Huddersfield Town ahead of the deadline.

Since coming in he has played in eleven games so far for us, and given a return of five goals and has played a huge part in us now finding ourselves only a point from safety, having scored the winner in our most recent game against Crawley Town.

'He's the platform for how we want to play and away at Ashton Gate he was absolutely brilliant on a great pitch, then, here (Meadow Lane), on an absolute mud bath, he holds the ball up for us and gets us advanced up the field and enables others to come into play.'

Derry goes on to say that he really appreciates the type of player he is, and more importantly so do the team because they know they can ping it to him and he'll hold it whilst they run in behind or find some space to take it back.

'He's producing performances now week in, week out and fair play to him, because not many people took the chance on Jimmy.'

The gaffer goes on to say that when we found out he was available be 'put our cards' on the table so to speak and expressed our interest in him, and doing that so quickly he does feel helped us capture him and now he's repaying that faith with his performances overall and his goal scoring record.

Not every signing works out when you maybe take a punt, but this one certainly has done and you'd imagine work is already under way to extend his deal, because when he joined us he only signed until the summer, so having no doubt impressed other sides since he came in, he'll feel he's found a home here and that will play in our favour.
