Bishop Steps Down As Captain

Neal Bishop has revealed that he will step down as captain next season.

The 31 year old is contracted to the club for another season, but he feels the time is right to pass the responsibility onto anothers' shoulders as Chris Kiwomya starts his first full season in charge next campaign.

Speaking to the Official Site Bishop explained.

'It wasn't something that I've taken lightly, because it's been the biggest honour of my career to be full time captain of this football club. To captain the oldest football club in the league in an honour I never thought I'd get and it's fantastic for me personally to say I've done it.'

Neal continues to say that now it's the end of the season, players look back on the campaign to asses their rights and wrongs so you can improve as a player and take that forward into the next campaign.

'I just think, for the club, there's going to be some big changes in the summer and the club's going in a different way now and I just think that it's better for everyone. Taking your ego out of it, you've got to put your employer's interests ahead of your own and I think that's what I've done.'

Chris Kiwomya has said he has appreciated the gesture and he believes it stands as testament to Bishop's professionalism and character that he has resigned the role to ensure that the manager looks at it moving forward.

'Bish feels as though he needs to step down so that I can take a look at it, which is typical of him, but he is still a captain on the pitch as far as I'm concerned. He shows everybody by his performances what a leader he is and nothing will change with that when he steps onto the pitch.'

A decision will be made over the summer on his replacement, or even whether Chris hands the armband back to him.
